A cameo is a hard or precious gemstone carved in relief so that images and figures project from a background. Typically, these figures are carved on one layer which is raised on the background of a second layer; they are often carved in glass or mollusk shells.

The origins of cameos can be traced back to Egypt in 15,000 B.C. where figures carved in rocks were used to record events. In our time in Sorrento, Naples and the Amalfi Coast, we have seen how popular the cameo jewelry is. You can buy it in different forms such as a pendant, bracelet, necklace, ring, and more. We decided to take a deeper dive to find out the deeper history and inner workings of this art form.

Bimonte is the oldest cameo workshop in Sorrento, Italy. The family-owned business does everything from carefully selecting shells to hand carving them with traditional Italian methods. Each piece is exceptionally detailed and tells a beautiful story. While the store is known for its intricate jewelry, the shop also sells large carved artwork. Additionally, the artists waste no part of the shell, so every piece is one of a kind.

When I visited, the shop owner, Christain, was amiable and knowledgeable about the art form. Anyone who speaks with him can tell he is very passionate about his craft. Also, The store occasionally has a traditional craftsman in-shop so visitors can watch the artistic process. No matter your style and price range, Bimonte has a unique piece for everyone that makes a perfect and timeless souvenir.

A breathtaking piece depicting Saint Bernadette having a vision of the Virgin Mary.

The video shows the tedious and detailed process of the carving the shells.

Bimonte has an extensive selection of cameos in all shapes and sizes.
